Title: Paradigm shifts in communication networks: cloud-native, automation and AI/ML

Abstract

5G networks come with considerable improvements on the radio part, offering unprecedented performances in both data rate and latency reduction. Yet, 5G adoption will be mainly driven by its capacity to satisfy very specific needs, providing pertinent and tailored features in a wide range of use cases. This flexibility requires a profound evolution in the way mobile networks are defined, architected, deployed, operated and, of course, marketed. This talk covers 3 main paradigm shifts, cloudification, automation and AI/ML, that are at the same time enabled-by and necessary-to 5G. The talk highlights the what and the why for each of them, and dig into the challenges and potential of combining them together.

Biography

Alberto Conte is head of research department at Nokia Bell Labs France. After receiving M.S. degrees in Corporate Communications and Telecommunication engineering from Institut Eurécom (France) and Politecnico di Torino (Italy), he joined the software department of Bell Labs. His research interest evolved from embedded systems to large wireless/mobile systems, for both enterprises and operators. He and his team pioneered the definition of 4G end-to-end mobile networks and delivered solutions for improving their energy efficiency. His current research focuses on Automation and AI/ML applied to cloud-native end-to-end communication systems, with special focus on E2E 5G. He participates to several collaborative EU projects and is an active lecturer on mobile technologies at various academic institutes. He is author of several publications and patents.
